Balancing editing and environmental volunteering

Editing requires a high degree of focus and concentration sitting in front of a computer screen, often for long hours, with finely controlled hand movements. No-one is more aware of that than a professional editor working from home. To stay healthy, have a break and refresh the mind and body, I volunteer in many environmental activities with the Australian Plants Society and Sutherland Shire Bushcare and community nursery. These interests are long standing, and I have continued or increased them after I started my business as a self-employed editor in late 2013. In some activities, I use the skills I have as an editor to organise, communicate and present information efficiently and clearly.

It was a great honour to be recognised for my activities over many years as Sutherland Shire’s Environmental Citizen of the Year 2025 at the Australia Day awards ceremony on 26 January. More here. See my CV with details of my volunteering work on my website here.

I encourage all to take a green break and enjoy the beauty of our natural environment for physical and mental health.
